Spied: 2012 BMW 6-Series Coupe

BMW’s showed off its latest 6 Series Convertible for the 2012 model year at this month’s Detroit Auto Show, and fortunately it hasn’t strayed very far from the styling of its inspiration, the 6 Series Coupe Concept, apart from losing its top. But now we’ve gotten our first glimpse of the production Coupe a little ahead of schedule.

The new 6 Series is 2.9-inches longer overall and in wheelbase than the outgoing version, while being 1.5 inches wider and just under half an inch shorter. Weight was a major factor in the new car, with efforts taken to drop pounds via body panels being made out of both aluminum and composite materials.

Power comes from a new 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 that pushes out 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. The Convertible’s 0-to-60-mph time is said to be just 4.9 seconds and we expect the coupe to shed a few tenths of a second from that. Combine that additional power with EPA figures that are expected to be lower and you can consider the 6 Series’ powertrain to be well improved.

Expect the finished product to be a technological tour d’ force, with Driving Dynamic control, ConnectedDrive, and a three-dimensional heads-up display. Active cruise control is also on the menu, along with start-stop capability, lane-departure warning, and night vision.

What’s next after the 6 Series Coupe debut in Geneva this March? We’re still waiting on a M version…

And Now Hyundai Veloster 2012 Sports Coupe Not Spy - Detroit Auto Show 2011

The Veloster has been on edge for months, years, all to discover for the first time today as part of Detroit. Does what we expected? For while the aesthetic is debatable (to taste colors) I'm going to play me a stoning complaining directly about what I see and read in the press release. Vale, comment on a data sheet and translated into feelings of driving is extremely complex, but I've taken a considerable disappointment with the production Veloster.

Hyundai will re-enter the affordable coupe market this year with the Veloster, shown for the first time at the Detroit motor show.

The new car has the unusual layout of a single door on the driver’s side and two conventional doors on the passenger side. Hyundai says this format is the same on both left and right hand drive models.

When it arrives in the UK, the Veloster will be “priced between the Renault Megane Coupe and VW Scirocco”, according to Hyundai sources.

Anyway, more interesting thing here is that Veloster strongly reminiscent of the coupe, but at the same time provides the functionality inherent in the hatch. This is possible thanks to the extra door on the passenger side with a hidden handle helps to keep the compartments typical design.

Running the Veloster is entrusted to the all-new 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine Gamma - the smallest of the power units of Hyundai, which uses technology GDI (gasoline direct injection).

GDI engine Gamma 1,6 is equipped with a change of camshaft phasing D-CVVT, develops maximum power of 138 hp at 6300 rpm and maximum torque of 167 Nm at 4850 rpm.

The car comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox or with the first transmission Hyundai's dual-clutch (DCT) with the same 6-degrees. It has eco mode (Active Eco), which removed the fuel consumption by 7%.

The vehicle boasts more with multiple security systems and equipment rich. Inside is an integrated multi-touch responding 7-inch screen that can play audio and video formats. The system also features a Pandora internet radio ("pull" Internet radio iPhone, Android and Blackberry), hard drive, Bluetooth connectivity with voice recognition, ability to load phone book, and rear view camera.

Veloster is equipped with a telematics system Blue Link. Crash and airbag deployment, it sends a signal to the user data and location of the car to a non-stop emergency center. The same procedure can be activated by pressing a dedicated SOS button in the car.

Blue Link offers opportunities for remote locking and unlocking doors, starting horn and lights and start the engine.

The system also notify the owner to activate the alarm via text message, email or call automatically, allows for notification of selected contacts from social networks including Facebook for its location - directly from the car and sending SMS with voice input text.

Blue Link carry out diagnostics of the vehicle, notifying the driver of any problems and gives instructions for immediate action, inform the owner via email or SMS about upcoming maintenance and sending monthly reports full results of testing, the system eco-coach and other important information.

The new technology provides for measures against theft of the car as well as opportunities for area control of movement and speed of the car (suitable for control of teenagers by their parents). Blue Link includes all the features of the most sophisticated navigation systems.

Still no information on when Veloster will enter the market.

Hot News: 2012 Subaru Impreza Coupe

Subaru is turning on the style! In a bold departure, the Japanese firm has an all-new coupé waiting in the wings – and it’s seeking to reignite enthusiasts’ passion for rally-inspired models, such as the Impreza, by reinventing the brand for a new audience. Our exclusive pictures show how the car will look when it hits UK roads.

The 2+2 coupé is being jointly developed with the Toyota FT-86. In a move to help reduce costs, Subaru will contribute the hardware for both cars. The chassis is a modified version of the Legacy’s platform, while the firm’s famous 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine appears under the bonnet.

This unit currently produces 148bhp in the Impreza hatch, but a new cylinder head with revised camshafts, pistons and valves will raise that figure to 200bhp. The 0-62mph sprint will take less than seven seconds, while a top speed of 140mph is expected. Using Toyota’s expertise in fuel efficiency, economy of 40mpg should be feasible, too. However, we can expect a more powerful 300bhp turbo version to follow.

The suspension, steering and brakes will all be tuned to deliver the sharpest driving experience possible, and again will be shared between the two models, as will the rear-wheel-drive layout. It’s a leap of faith for Subaru, a company famous for using 4WD, but one that’s necessary for lightness and agility. For the same reason, both cars will use a six-speed manual gearbox, instead of a heavier dual-clutch unit.

Displaying a striking new look, the production model will take its inspiration from the Impreza Design Concept shown at the Los Angeles Motor Show last month. Specifically, the hawkeye headlights and front air vents with integrated LED running lights will be carried over, giving the car a purposeful face to match its performance.

Marking the Subaru out will be a prominent rear diffuser with twin tailpipes, body-coloured A-pillars – instead of the wraparound windscreen seen on the FT-86 – and a huge bonnet scoop to help cool the engine. The production version of Toyota’s coupé is scheduled to debut at the Tokyo Motor Show next October.

However, considering the common components of both cars, expect the newcomers to debut as a pair, and cost around £25,000 when they reach UK showrooms early in 2012. For more details click here.

New Car: 2012 BMW 1-Series M Coupe

We’ve already driven BMW’s upcoming 1-series M coupe and spoken at length with those responsible for its development; about the only thing we haven’t done is seen the car sans camouflage. Put that complaint to rest, oh ye faithful.

Even the appearance of the 1-series M coupe seen here holds few surprises, as the cars we drove previously wore only light camo. Multiple massive intakes in the front fascia ensure that the engine will never hunger for more air, and the gnarly fender flares look even more menacing in paint than they did covered in paisley-print vinyl. Tucked inside those flares are M3 Competition package wheels, and behind those wheels are M3 brakes. Supporting all of that is M3 suspension with an M3 diff in the rear—noticing a trend? Sadly, there’s no carbon-fiber roof like that on the M3, but the 1-series M will make up for it by not offering a sunroof, as it would add weight and raise the vehicle’s center of gravity. Only three colors will be available: black, white, and orange.

Under the hood, which notably lacks the signature power bump sported by all other M vehicles, from the M3 to the 5400-pound X5 M, is the great differentiator. Where the M3 packs its screaming 8400-rpm V-8—and where screaming, high-rpm engines are supposed to be an M trademark—the 1-series M coupe is powered by the twin-turbo inline-six of yore. Don’t be too disappointed, though, as output has been ratcheted up to 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of nominal torque. As in the 335is, an overboost function makes 369 lb-ft available for brief spurts. Zero-to-60-mph sprints should take about 4.3 seconds.

Inside, black leather is trimmed with Alcantara, orange stitching gives the car an appropriately sporty look, and the leather steering wheel boasts an M button that is programmable to the driver’s preferred chassis, powertrain, and nanny-system settings. The only transmission is a six-speed manual.

While the parts-bin engine and suspension make it seem a bit like an intermediary M car, there’s another perspective from which to consider the 1-series M coupe: It’s a 135i with more power, M3 suspension, and a wicked body kit. And, as we’ve previously reported, the sticker should be around $43,000 when this car bows next spring, making the price the most blatantly and appreciably “intermediate M” aspect of the 1-series.

Spied: 2012 Mercedes C-Class Coupe AMG

AMG used to be about straight-line performance above all. The small subsidiary, located some 15 miles north of Stuttgart in the village of Affalterbach, has traditionally focused on stuffing monstrous V-8 and V-12 engines into pretty much everything Mercedes makes. But now, the sub-brand is focusing more intently on compact and agile cars.

Seen here is an AMG version of the upcoming C-class coupe, which is built on the same platform as—but is designed to cater to a younger customer base than—the E-class coupe. Power for AMG's C coupe will come from a slightly detuned version of Affalterbach’s new 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8. It will likely be turbocharged, although we've heard voices say a naturally aspirated version is not entirely unthinkable. A turbocharged V-6 is another possibility. What the coupe would be called is still up in the air and depends on what powers the vehicle—if it gets the turbo 5.5-liter, it will likely be called C63, but if it gets a naturally aspirated version of that engine or a six, the designation would almost certainly be different. Regardless of powerplant, top speed will be governed at 155 mph, but AMG will offer a package to increase top speed to a governed 174 mph.

Visual cues will include four large exhaust pipes, 18- or 19-inch AMG wheels, a sizeable rear spoiler that grows out of the shoulder line's upward kink, and an aero package. The front end will be dominated by large air intakes in the fascia with aggressive LED daytime running light strips. Inside, the AMG will have unique aluminum or carbon-fiber trim and sports seats.

The C-class coupe, by the way, won't remain the smallest AMG for long. We expect versions of the next-generation A- and B-class platform, potentially powered by a turbocharged four churning out upwards of 300 hp. But, with hairy V-8 muscle a near certainty—and with a Black Series sedan in the stable—the C-class is looking like the AMG project to watch.
